ABOUT AREQUIPA

Arequipa is Peru's second largest city after Lima with a population of just under a million people - it is located in Southern Peru some 1,000 kilometres from the capital. Situated at 2,335 metres above sea level and constructed from white volcanic stone ("sillar") its buildings, with their distinctive colonial Spanish architecture, reflect an all year round sunny climate and give rise to its nickname, "The White City". The city has been designated as one of World cultural heritage by UNESCO. Additionally you can enjoy some of the Wolrd’s best food. Arequipa’s cuisine is full of exquisite flavors and has the same character as its people, strong and unforgettable. Arequipa is where 100% of Peru’s alpaca fibre is processed and then exported worldwide as semi and/or fully finished textile product.

In the Past

The region occupied by Arequipa was originally inhabited by the "Huari" people during the 7th Century and later, during the 10th Century, by the "Tiahuanaco" culture - both of these periods being pre-Inca. Later, when the Inca Empire was at its apex, legend has it that the Inca ruler, Mayta Capac, beheld the beauty of the region and told a group of his followers, "Ariquepay" (which means "you may stay" in Quechua), thus Arequipa got its name. The Spanish Conquistadors arrived in Perú in early 1500 and, in 1540, Arequipa was officially founded by Captain Garci Manuel de Carbajal in what today is the San Lazaro district of the city.

Climate

The Fiesta takes place during the Southern hemisphere's springtime and you can expect plenty of unbroken sunshine with daytime temperatures of 25 °C dropping down to 12 °C at night. During the day it is recommended that casual attire be worn with hats, sunblock and sunglasses essential. At night it is advisable to carry a jacket.

2011 FIESTA EVENTS

Opening ceremony

A warm welcome to all our guests is to be held on the evening of the first day. Enjoy Peru’s national drink the “Pisco Sour” and finger food whilst professional Peruvian artists perform for you. To end the night a fireworks display will light up the Arequipa night sky.

National Alpaca Competition

Hundreds of alpacas from the best Peruvian ranches will be present at “Alpaca Fiesta 2011’s National Competition”. Judging will take place over 3 days with the awards ceremony to be held on Saturday morning. Participants will be witness to the Peruvian breeders’ persistence and dedication.

Conferences Participants can attend courses and workshops related to the alpaca industry presented by experts in their fields. Topics to include alpaca fibre, alpaca breeding, alpaca fashion, manufacturing and industrial processes.

Business Exchange

In the afternoons there will be the opportunity for participants to make new industry contacts and friends with Alpaca industry representatives from around the World at the Alpaca Fiesta.

Fashion Shows

The objective of our fashion shows will be to promote all the different uses for alpaca fibre as well as to promote Arequipa’s architectural and historical places. In these fashion shows you will enjoy a variety of national and foreign designers’ collections. Four shows will be presented; Juniors’, Seniors’, Main and Peruvian Designers.

Factory visits

The leading alpaca fibre manufacturing companies will open their factories exclusively for the participants in Alpaca Fiesta 2011 where the latest technology in alpaca fibre industrialisation will be on display. Our participants can learn about industry techniques with, hopefully, all questions answered.

Gala Dinner

Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of Peruvian cuisine and ethnic dances – an unforgettable culinary experience on Friday night.

Closing ceremony

On Saturday morning all the alpaca champions will receive their awards and recognition followed by a Peruvian Paso Horse exhibition and typical lunch.

Horsemanship Show

Considered as unique worldwide for its peculiar movements and graceful walk, the Peruvian Paso horse is an important part of the country’s rich national culture well-known around the world. These horses are synonymous with loyalty and nobility, temperament and arrogance; they have become one of the nation’s symbols. Ridden by our expert “Chalanes” the horses dance the “Marinera Norteña” in the company of beautiful ladies.

Chaccu

Participate in the traditional Inca method of rounding-up vicuñas for shearing, which will take place in the community of Toccra. This is a one of kind of experience where participants will not just have the chance of being part of an ancient ceremony but experience the Highland Peruvian breeder’s lifestyle. Sacred Valley of the Incas

This beautiful and inviting valley between Pisaq and Ollantaytambo was esteemed by our ancestors due to the special conditions it has like: beneficial climate, generous fertility of its land, and the presence of the Wilcamayu or Sacred River. In this zone, the Incas found an appropriate place to leave samples of their wide knowledge on hydraulics and their deep love for nature. It is known as the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Drive on paved road or walk, bike, horse ride or raft along the Sacred River Vilcanota.

Staying in Urubamba finds you perfectly placed to visit Ollantaytambo, Pisaq, Chinchero, Moras, Moray, Machu Picchu and much more.

Pisaq, is a picturesque town with a half-breed colonial appearance. Visit the native fair in Pisaq (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays). On Sundays, people celebrate the traditional mass in Quechua with the attendance of the Varayocs or native Mayors. Visit the mystical Incan ruins on a 2 or 4 hr walk through this majestic mountain setting. In Moras you can visit the salt mines whilst Moray offers the opportunity to view an Incan Agricultural centre of knowledge. Ollantaytambo is a small town functioning today as it did 500 years ago. Machupicchu ruins, located 113km. from Cusco and at 2350m.a.s.l. is in a subtropical area with an average annual temperature of 13° C during the day. There are two clearly defined seasons: the rainy season, from November to March and dry season from April to October. Hiram Bingham discovered this Inca Citadel on the July 24th, 1911. This archaeological site is divided in two sections: the farming section and the urban one, which are subdivided into sites such as: check points, the high cemetery and ceremonial rock, the Temple of the Sun, the Intiwatana, the sacred rock group, the Three windowed temple, the main Temple, tombs, doors, fountains and squares. With numbers now limited on the Inca trail and limits proposed for the ruins in 2012 don’t miss your opportunity to visit this mystical wonder of the World.

Together with one of our qualified bilingual guides explore the streets of Cusco taking in 500 year old Spanish architecture constructed upon ancient Incan foundations whilst learning about the indigenous Quechua cultures, the Spanish conquistadores and life today for the local people. BBQ or Adobe Wood-oven lunch at our operations base Kutimunki Wasi before a cultural visit to the community of Chichubamba where you will enter their homes and learn about their way of life first hand from local community members. Heading south from Lima through the coastal desert along the Pan American Highway to the Ballestas Islands, the Desert Oasis of Huacachina. Overnight in the Agricultural centre of Ica famous for its Pisco. You will see one of the most baffling enigmas of archaeology, geometrical figures etched into stony desert flying over the Nazca Lines.

Return to Lima for your flight into the Andes Mountains and the "White City" of Arequipa, rimmed by three Volcanoes and home to the 16th-century Santa Catalina Convent, where the inhabitants have lived cut off from the outside world for more than 400 years. Bathe in the thermal hot springs and view condors in flight from the rim of world's deepest canyon, Colca Canyon. Taking a little travelled route you will make your way high into the Altiplano and arrive to the city of Puno on the World’s highest navigable lake, stopping at the Ancient Aymaran ruins of Sillustani and visiting local communities along the way. After a full day boat trip and night on Lake Titicaca the next stop is the Imperial City of Cusco, centre of the Incan empire referred to as "the navel of the World". Here you will visit Incan ruins, take in 500 year old Spanish architecture and learn about the indigenous Quechua peoples.

From Cusco set out through stunning Andean scenery to the Sacred Valley of the Incas where you will visit colourful local markets and imposing Inca fortresses. Arriving to the Sacred Valley you will have a chance to relax and visit the local community of Chichubamba. Before returning to Cusco you will set off along the Inca Trail. The Trek combines a stunning mix of Incan ruins and mountain scenery. Over a distance of only 45km and reaching elevations around 4200m you will traverse and transcend both space and time as you experience the same stunning views and inexplicable sense of power the ancient Incas did on their pilgrimage to Machu Picchu during the height of the Incan Empire. Overnight at Machu Picchu with the option to return to the ruins before returning to Cusco for a free day.

A short flight then sees you arriving to the town of Puerto Maldonado located in the southern part of the Peruvian Amazon basin. The lodge is about an hour’s canoe ride from Puerto Maldonado adjacent to the Tambopata National Park. A compact yet thorough excursion, featuring superb activities and explorations, that enables you to discover a wide diversity of ecosystems subsisting in the Amazon rainforest, and to explore the rich biodiversity within the Tambopata region. The wildlife is amazing, from giant and colorful parrots, to toucans, macaws, tapir, tamarin, owl, the gorgeous Southern Amazon Red Squirrel, as well as a large variety of monkeys.
